Crossword Genius

Dodge duel, wasting energy (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

elude

'dodge' is the definition.
(I know that dodge is a more specific form of dodge)

'duel wasting energy' is the wordplay.
'wasting' indicates an anagram (waste can mean to destroy).
'energy' becomes 'e' (physics symbol as in E=mc2).
'duel' anagrammed gives 'elud'.
'elud'+'e'='ELUDE'

(Other definitions for elude that I've seen before include "Avoid first" , "Dodge, duck" , "Escape - avoid" , "Evade, escape from" , "Get round" .)

I've seen this clue in The Mirror.
