Dogs inside - sticks outside (7)
I believe the answer is:
canines
'dogs' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'inside sticks outside' is the wordplay.
'inside' becomes 'in'.
'sticks' becomes 'canes' (cane is a kind of stick).
'outside' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'in' put within 'canes' is 'CANINES'.
(Another definition for canines that I've seen is " Dogs -- teeth".)
I've seen this clue in The Independent.
