Crossword Genius

Doing porridge, frantically mixed up? (4-5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stir-crazy

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'frantically mixed up?' is the definition.
I know nothing about this answer so I cannot judge whether this works.

'doing porridge' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'porridge' could be 'stir' (both are slang terms for prison) and 'stir' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'crazy' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for stir-crazy that I've seen is " Impatient at having nothing to do (in prison?)".)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
