Don't go south to finish up (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stop

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'finish up' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'don't go south to' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'south' could be 's' (abbreviation) and 's' is present in the answer.
'to' is found in the answer.
A single letter 'p' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stop that I've seen before include "set of organ pipes" , "Plug - organ knob - bus halt - period" , "Quit" , "Part of organ" , "Cease, halt" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
