I believe the answer is:

lights

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'lands' is the definition.
(lighting is a kind of landing)

'down south in remote' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'south' could be 's' (abbreviation) and 's' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'light' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for lights that I've seen before include "Sources of illumination" , "See 2" , "SECOND PART OF 13" , "organs" , "Lamps" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
