Crossword Genius

Downward movements of some French money (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

descents

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'downward movements' is the definition.
'descents' can be an answer for 'movements' (descent is a kind of movement). I'm not certain of the 'downward' bit.

'some french money' is the wordplay.
'some french' becomes 'de' ('some' in French).
'money' becomes 'scents' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'de'+'scents'='DESCENTS'

'of' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for descents that I've seen before include "raids" , "Movements downward" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
