Drank up a round ahead of the others (6)
I believe the answer is:
lapped
'drank up' is the definition.
'lapped' can be an answer for 'drank' (lapping is a kind of drinking). I am not certain of the 'up' bit.
'a round ahead of the others' is the wordplay.
'a round' becomes 'lap' (as in a round or lap of a park).
'ahead of' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other) (I've seen this in other clues).
'the others' becomes 'ped' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'lap'+'ped'='LAPPED'
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for lapped that I've seen before include "Made extra circuit" , "Overtaken by someone a circuit ahead" , "Scooped up with the tongue" , "Washed or flowed against" , "Took up with the tongue" .)
