Crossword Genius

Ross

I believe the answer is:

dressing down

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'lecture' is the definition.
(thesaurus)

'drink after getting into gear' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'drink' could be 'down' (to down something can mean to drink it quickly) and 'down' is found within the answer.
'into' could be 'in' and 'in' is located in the answer.
'gear' could be 'dress' (both can mean clothing) and 'dress' is located in the answer.
A single letter 'g' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'for' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for dressing down that I've seen before include "rebuke" , "Maybe not wearing a tie in the office" , "telling-off" , "Severe reprimand" , "Severe scolding (in old clothes?)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
