I believe the answer is:
tipple
'drink' is the definition.
(I know that tipple is a type of drink)
'advice applied regularly' is the wordplay.
'advice' becomes 'tip' (a tip is a piece of advice).
'regularly' means one should take alternating letters (regularly take one letter, leave next etc.).
The alternate letters of 'applied' are 'ple'.
'tip'+'ple'='TIPPLE'
'little and often' acts as a link.
