Drink, swallowing last of beer, and stand in shock (8)
I believe the answer is:
surprise
'shock' is the definition.
(I know that shock is a kind of surprise)
'drink swallowing last of beer and stand' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'stand' could be 'rise' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'rise' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'in' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for surprise that I've seen before include "Mild astonishment" , "Bombshell" , "Unexpected occurrence" , "Sudden astounding event" , "Sudden unexpected event" .)
