Crossword Genius

Drinks up, goes for a drive (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

spin

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'for a drive' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'drinks up' is the wordplay.
'drinks' becomes 'nips' (miniature drink bottles).
'up' is a reversal indicator (in down clue: letters go upwards).
'nips' in reverse letter order is 'SPIN'.

'goes' acts as a link.
I am not very happy about this link. It may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for spin that I've seen before include "Rotate repeatedly" , "Short drive" , "Rotate; ride" , "Gyrate, reel" , "Political bias" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
