Crossword Genius

Driving competitively, squeezing teammate into roundabout, perhaps (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

rallying

'driving competitively' is the definition.
(driving in a rally)

'teammate into roundabout perhaps' is the wordplay.
'teammate' becomes 'ally'.
'into' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'roundabout perhaps' becomes 'ring' (roundabouts are ring-shaped).
'ally' put into 'ring' is 'RALLYING'.

'squeezing' acts as a link.
I am not very happy about this link. It may belong to another bit of the clue.

(Other definitions for rallying that I've seen before include "Reviving" , "Making fun of" , "Motor sport" , "Cry after this" , "Gathering" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
