Early part of day for poet to hear lament (5)
I believe the answer is:
mourn
'lament' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'early part of day' is the wordplay.
'early' becomes 'ur' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'part of' means one lot of letters goes inside another (part of the inside).
'day' becomes 'mon' (short for Monday).
'ur' inserted inside 'mon' is 'MOURN'.
'for poet to hear' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for mourn that I've seen before include "Lament loss" , "Show sorrow at death" , "Keen" , "Be sad over loss" , "Express sadness" .)
