Earwig goes lower, closer to small flies (9)
I believe the answer is:
eavesdrop
'earwig' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'lower closer to small flies' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'lower' could be 'drop' (I've seen this before) and 'drop' is located in the answer.
'small' could be 's' (abbreviation - e.g. clothes size) and 's' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'eave' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'goes' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for eavesdrop that I've seen before include "Deprave so to listen secretly" , "Listen secretly to others' conversations" , "Hold secret hearing" , "Listen carefully" , "Listen in, earwig" .)
