Ross

I believe the answer is:

axle

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'wheel' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'east after a40 for one' is the wordplay.
'east' becomes 'E' (synonyms).
'after' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'a40' becomes 'a'.
'for' says to put letters next to each other.
'one' becomes 'xl' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'a'+'xl'='axl'
'e' put after 'axl' is 'AXLE'.

'taking' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for axle that I've seen before include "A wheel revolves around it" , "Shaft on which a wheel rotates" , "Rod attachment to wheels" , "Rod making wheels turn" , "Wheel support" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
