Edgy student, giving affirmative answer to English faculty member, remained behind (6,2)
I believe the answer is:
stayed on
'remained behind' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'edgy student giving affirmative answer to english faculty member' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'affirmative' could be 'aye' ('aye' means 'yes') and 'aye' is found within the answer.
'member' could be 'don' (I have seen 'Member of university ' mean 'don' so perhaps 'member' could also mean 'don') and 'don' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'st' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for stayed on that I've seen before include "Remained after others left" , "remained behind" .)
