Effort to acquire new Irish plates etc. (6,3)
I believe the answer is:
dinner set
'plates etc' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'effort to acquire new irish' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'effort' could be 'set' (set is a kind of effort) and 'set' is present in the answer.
'new' could be 'n' (common abbreviation eg NT for New Testament) and 'n' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'diner' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for dinner set that I've seen before include "crockery" , "might be taken out for a meal" , "China" , "Collection of plates and dishes" , "Table service" .)
