Egyptian's spirit stated to be broken (5)
I believe the answer is:
kaput
'be broken' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'egyptian's spirit stated' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'spirit' could be 'ka' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'ka' is located in the answer.
'stated' could be 'put' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'put' is found in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'to' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for kaput that I've seen before include "Completely broken down" , "Ruined (slang)" , "Broken down irretrievably" , "Up the spout" , "Broken (sl.)" .)
