Crossword Genius

Engineers currently acquiring new fame (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

renown

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'fame' is the definition.
(I know that fame can be written as renown)

'engineers currently acquiring new' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'engineers' could be 're' (Royal Engineers) and 're' is found within the answer.
'currently' could be 'now' (right now) and 'now' is present in the answer.
'new' could be 'n' (common abbreviation eg NT for New Testament) and 'n' is present in the answer.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for renown that I've seen before include "High repute" , "Fame and eminence" , "Good reputation" , "High reputation, fame" , "Fame, respect" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
