English resort's scandal involving male beasts? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ramsgate

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'english resort's' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'scandal involving male beasts?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'scandal' could be 'gate' (as in Watergate and other formations) and 'gate' is found in the answer.
'male' could be 'ram' (male sheep) and 'ram' is found within the answer.
A single letter 's' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for ramsgate that I've seen before include "Violently strikes barrier in seaside town" , "English resort" , "Kent town" , "port" , "Kent seaside resort" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
