Enthusiastic about horse -- one finally ran (7)
I believe the answer is:
managed
'ran' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'enthusiastic about horse one finally' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'about' could be 'a' (abbreviation in Chambers) and 'a' is found within the answer.
'horse' could be 'nag' (term for an old horse) and 'nag' is present in the answer.
'one' could be 'me' (a setter might use 'one' to humourously mean 'me') and 'me' is located in the leftover letters.
A single letter 'd' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for managed that I've seen before include "Coped" , "Controlled, was in charge of" , "Ran, administered" , "Supervised (staff)" , "Contrived" .)
