Crossword Genius

Establish a new singing group (not American) (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

anchor

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'establish' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both to do with contact as well as being verbs in their base form.
Perhaps there's an association between them I don't understand?

'a new singing group not american' is the wordplay.
'a new' becomes 'an' (I've seen this in other clues).
'singing group' becomes 'chorus' (I've seen this before).
'not' is a deletion indicator.
'american' becomes 'us'.
'chorus' with 'us' taken away is 'chor'.
'an'+'chor'='ANCHOR'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for anchor that I've seen before include "Brake for a boat" , "Device to hold a ship in place" , "Ship's mooring at sea" , "Ship's fluke" , "Device to keep ship in place" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
