Crossword Genius

Eternal loser, no flair ultimately limiting hard work and energy (2-5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

no-hoper

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'eternal loser' is the definition.
'no hoper' can be an answer for 'loser' (I've seen this before). I am unsure of the 'eternal' bit.

'no flair ultimately limiting hard work and energy' is the wordplay.
'ultimately' says to take the final letters.
'limiting' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'hard work' becomes 'hop' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'and' says to put letters next to each other.
'energy' becomes 'e' (physics symbol as in E=mco).
The final letter of 'flair' is 'r'.
'no'+'r'='nor'
'hop'+'e'='hope'
'nor' going around 'hope' is 'NO-HOPER'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for no-hoper that I've seen before include "One with little prospect of success" , "One unlikely to succeed" , "Person expected to fail" , "One with little chance of success?" , "One not expected to succeed" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
