Evergreen City, bypassing midfield, push forward (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cypress

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'evergreen' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'city bypassing midfield push forward' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'push' could be 'press' (press is a kind of push) and 'press' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for cypress that I've seen before include "Widely cultivated conifer" , "Wood" , "Dark-leaved conifer" , "Tree with funereal associations" , "Evergreen, mourning symbol" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
