Crossword Genius

Exercise over, boy overturned boat (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pedalo

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'boat' is the definition.
(I know that pedalo is a type of boat)

'exercise over boy overturned' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'exercise' could be 'pe' (Physical Education) and 'pe' is found in the answer.
'over' could be 'o' (cricket abbreviation) and 'o' is present in the answer.
'boy' could be 'dal' and 'dal' is present in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pedalo that I've seen before include "Pleasure craft -- old ape (anag)" , "Paddle boat" , "Small foot-powered pleasure boat" , "Man-powered leisure boat" , "Boat driven by foot power" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
