Crossword Genius

Exhibit Holbeins and new Goyas at the front (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hang

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the front' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both human attributes as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps there's an association between them I don't understand?

'exhibit holbeins and new goyas' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'and' could be 'n' (common abbreviation for 'and') and 'n' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'hag' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

'at' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hang that I've seen before include "Kill with a noose" , "Hover" , "Go to the gallows" , "Suspend, perhaps execute" , "Be suspended" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
