Expression of hesitation over tirade as “rambling” (6)

I believe the answer is:
errant
'rambling' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'expression of hesitation over tirade' is the wordplay.
'expression of hesitation' becomes 'er'.
'over' says to put letters next to each other (in a down clue, some letters go over others).
'tirade' becomes 'rant' (both can mean an angry outburst).
'er'+'rant'='ERRANT'
'as' acts as a link.
(Other definitions for errant that I've seen before include "Misbehaving" , "Rambling" , "like Don Quixote?" , "Root vegetable" , "Sinful" .)
