Crossword Genius

Expressionless, now turning to take in poem (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

wooden

'expressionless' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'now turning to take in poem' is the wordplay.
'turning' says the letters should be written backwards.
'to take in' indicates putting letters inside.
'poem' becomes 'ode' (ode is a kind of poem).
'now' written backwards gives 'won'.
'won' going around 'ode' is 'WOODEN'.

(Other definitions for wooden that I've seen before include "without emotion" , "Stiff as a board (when acting?)" , "Unconvincing (of a stage performance) - made of oak?" , "clumsy" , "Ligneous" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
