Crossword Genius

Extract energy out to provide thrust (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

drive

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This might be a double definition.

'extract energy out' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.

'thrust' is the second definition.
(I know that thrust can be written as drive)

'to provide' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for drive that I've seen before include "Motivate" , "Urge; approach to house" , "Steer; trip" , "Determination, ambition" , "Hit ball with force" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
