Crossword Genius

Facial hair (not black) on strange part of body (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

eardrum

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'part of body' is the definition.
'eardrum' can be an answer for 'part' (eardrum is a kind of part). I'm not certain of the 'of body' bit.

'facial hair not black on strange' is the wordplay.
'facial hair' becomes 'beard' (I've seen this in another clue).
'not' suggests deleting specific letters.
'black' becomes 'b' (abbreviation as in pencil hardness).
'on strange' becomes 'rum' (similar in meaning. I am not sure about the 'on' bit.).
'beard' with 'b' taken away is 'eard'.
'eard'+'rum'='EARDRUM'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for eardrum that I've seen before include "Ear membrane" , "Listener partly" , "One hears" , "Organ membrane" , "hearing part" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
