Crossword Genius

Famous weapon without distinction we’re told (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

excalibur

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'famous weapon' is the definition.
'excalibur' can be an answer for 'weapon' (I've seen this before). I am not sure about the 'famous' bit.

'without distinction we're told' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'without' could be 'ex' (Latin) and 'ex' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for excalibur that I've seen before include "King Arthur's magical sword" , "Legendary weapon" , "Traditional weapon" , "The legendary sword of King Arthur" , "Steel flourished years ago" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
