Crossword Genius

Fascinated when dent is removed from flat surface (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

fascia

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'flat surface' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how one could define the other.

'fascinated when dent is removed' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'when' could be 'as' (eg 'when I walked' means 'as I walked') and 'as' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'from' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for fascia that I've seen before include "Signboard above a shop" , "board above shop window" , "Surface for display; dashboard" , "panel" , "Flat strip on shop front for name etc" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
