Fathers showing anger on board (5)
I believe the answer is:
sires
'fathers' is the definition.
(I know this)
'anger on board' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'anger' could be 'ire' (ire is intense rage) and 'ire' is found in the answer.
'on board' could be 'ss' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'ss' is present in the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'showing' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for sires that I've seen before include "Begets" , "Fathers" .)
