Feeling better when taken off duty (8)
I believe the answer is:
relieved
'taken off duty' is the definition.
'relieved' can be an answer for 'taken' (relieving is a kind of taking). I am unsure of the 'off duty' bit.
'feeling better' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'better' could be 'relieve' (relieving is a kind of bettering) and 'relieve' is found in the answer.
A single letter 'd' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).
'when' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for relieved that I've seen before include "Not so anxious - replacement has arrived" , "Comforted" , "siege is broken?" , "Freed from distress" , "Made less monotonous" .)
