Crossword Genius

Feline visits old church a great deal (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ocelot

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'feline' is the definition.
(I know that ocelot is a type of cat)

'old church a great deal' is the wordplay.
'old' becomes 'o' (common abbreviation eg in OE for Old English).
'church' becomes 'ce' (Church of England).
'a great deal' becomes 'lot' (both can mean a large amount).
'o'+'ce'+'lot'='OCELOT'

'visits' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. It may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for ocelot that I've seen before include "Wildcat -- loo etc (anag)" , "Wild creature" , "Spotted New World feline" , "American wild cat" , "Striped and spotted wildcat" .)

I've seen this clue in The Mirror.
