Crossword Genius

Fellow confronted about making Java drug-free? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

decaff

'java drug-free?' is the definition.
(Java is a type of coffee)

'fellow confronted about' is the wordplay.
'fellow' becomes 'f' (abbreviation - of a society etc.).
'confronted' becomes 'faced' ('face' can be a synonym of 'confront').
'about' shows that the letters should be reversed in order.
'f'+'faced'='ffaced'
'ffaced' reversed gives 'DECAFF'.

'making' is the link.

(Other definitions for decaff that I've seen before include "Coffee without the kick" , "Type of coffee (colloq.)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
