Crossword Genius

Female member of a string quartet (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

viola

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'member of a string quartet' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'female' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'female' could be 'vi' (short for Violet, a woman's name) and 'vi' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ola' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for viola that I've seen before include "Plant; instrument" , "Bowed instrument slightly larger than a violin" , "whose player takes a bow" , "Page" , "part of Shakespeare" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
