Fielding position in the news? (5)
I believe the answer is:
point
'fielding position' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'in the news?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'in' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'pot' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
(Other definitions for point that I've seen before include "Indicate with finger, may be sharp" , "Use" , "Land jutting into sea" , "Indicate; promontory" , "Sharp or tapering end" .)
