Finally attained a high position (5,2)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ended up

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'finally attained' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are past participle verbs, I can't see how they can define each other.

'a high position' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'high' could be 'up' (associated in meaning) and 'up' is found in the answer.
'position' could be 'end' (end is a kind of position) and 'end' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ed' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for ended up that I've seen before include "Reached final state (as)" , "Finished" , "Arrived eventually" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail and The Guardian.
