Crossword Genius

First decent break, Edward wandered about aimlessly (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

drifted

'wandered about aimlessly' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'first decent break edward' is the wordplay.
'first decent' becomes 'd' (1st letter of 'decent').
'break' becomes 'rift' (rift can mean a break or opening).
'edward' becomes 'Ed' (short for Edward).
'd'+'rift'+'ed'='DRIFTED'

(Other definitions for drifted that I've seen before include "Meandered, floated without direction" , "Wandered about aimlessly" , "Moved aimlessly from place to place" , "Moved around aimlessly" , "Moved with the current, floated" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
