Crossword Genius

Flatter the person you've just toasted? (6,2)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

butter up

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'flatter' is the definition.
(buttering up is a kind of flattering)

'person you've just toasted?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'person' could be 'butter' (butter is a kind of person) and 'butter' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'up' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'the' is the link.
