Fogbound lad beat "raining"champion? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

mudlark

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'beat rainingchampion?' is the definition.
I can't judge whether this definition defines the answer.

'fogbound lad' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
an anagram of 'lad' is 'dla' which is within the answer.
The remaining letters 'murk' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for mudlark that I've seen before include "Scavenger" , "One scavenging beside river" , "flyer" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
