Crossword Genius

Follow directions audibly from labourer on step (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

navigate

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'follow' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both to do with motion as well as being verbs in their base form.
Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

'directions audibly from labourer on step' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'on' could be 'at' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'at' is present in the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for navigate that I've seen before include "Plan ship's course" , "Plan route (eg, of ship)" , "I get a van (anag.)" , "Go by sea" , "Plan and follow a route" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
