Fool around southeast not out? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

closet

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'not out?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how they can define each other.

'fool around southeast' is the wordplay.
'fool' becomes 'clot' (I've seen this in other clues).
'around' is an insertion indicator.
'southeast' becomes 'SE' (synonyms).
'clot' placed around 'se' is 'CLOSET'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for closet that I've seen before include "Private room; cupboard" , "Confine" , "US press for clothing" , "Secret - cupboard" , "Small room or wardrobe" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
