Fool gets example without no help (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

assistance

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'help' is the definition.
(I know that help can be written as assistance)

'fool gets example without no' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'fool' could be 'ass' (both can mean a stupid person) and 'ass' is located in the answer.
'gets' could be 'is' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'is' is present in the answer.
'no' could be 'n' (common abbreviation) and 'n' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'tace' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for assistance that I've seen before include "Aid" , "Support" , "Help" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
