Crossword Genius

Foolish person going around society dance (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

twist

'dance' is the definition.
(I know that twist is a more specific form of the action dance)

'foolish person going around society' is the wordplay.
'foolish person' becomes 'twit' (I've seen this in another clue).
'going around' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'society' becomes 's' (common abbreviation in names of organisations).
'twit' placed around 's' is 'TWIST'.

(Other definitions for twist that I've seen before include "Bend round; dance" , "title character" , "Unexpected development of events" , "Spiral" , "One who asked for more" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
