Crossword Genius

Force moving mass to part of gut (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

momentum

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'force' is the definition.
(I know that momentum is a type of force)

'moving mass to part of gut' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'mass' could be 'm' (symbol used in Physics e.g. f=ma) and 'm' is found in the answer.
'part' could be 'mentum' (mentum is a kind of part) and 'mentum' is present in the answer.
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is found in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for momentum that I've seen before include "Forward impetus" , "Impetus gained by a moving object" , "Driving force, impetus" , "driving power" , "Impetus gained by movement, maybe downhill" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
