Crossword Genius

Force welcoming a cheer (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

praise

'cheer' is the definition.
(I know that cheer is a more specific form of the action applaud)

'force welcoming a' is the wordplay.
'force' becomes 'prise' (I've seen this in other clues).
'welcoming' indicates putting letters inside (in sense of 'inviting in').
'prise' going around 'a' is 'PRAISE'.

(Other definitions for praise that I've seen before include "Commendation" , "Extol, glorify" , "Express approval and admiration" , "Extol, laud" , "Honour" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
