Crossword Genius

Forced to return the cheese (4)

Ross

I think it could be either:

edam

made

'cheese' is the definition.
(Edam is an example)

'forced to return' is the wordplay.
'forced' becomes 'made' (both can mean coerced).
'to return' says the letters should be written backwards.
'made' written backwards gives 'EDAM'.

'the' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for edam that I've seen before include "edible sphere" , "Made into popular cheese" , "Spherical cheese" , "Cheese made in Holland" , "Dutch specialty" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Globe and Mail.
