Foreman maybe embraced by group blushing? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

scarlet

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'blushing?' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'foreman maybe embraced by group' is the wordplay.
'foreman maybe' becomes 'carl' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'embraced by' is an insertion indicator.
'group' becomes 'set' (both can mean a collection).
'carl' put within 'set' is 'SCARLET'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for scarlet that I've seen before include "Bright red of clarets" , "bloody?" , "Brilliant red colour" , "Clarets (anag.)" , "Miss O'Hara appearing briefly" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
